I’ve been training with power for a number of years now – I have a computrainer which, sadly given I live in the frozen north, sees FAR too much of me!! I also have a power tap wheel I used in training. I jumped at the offer to trial an Infocrank system at this year’s Haute Route Pyrenees for a couple of reasons – firstly I was not going to be able to “race with power” as the training wheels (and Powertap) were going to be left at home in favour of the Mavic Cosmics Carbone Ultimates and secondly because I’d started to survey the market for a more convenient crank based power system. I have used the Infocrank now since month or so before HRP and I am totally sold on it.

As an engineer the power measurement methodology makes total (technical) sense to me and of course having power data at my fingertips so to speak is invaluable. And having this data available to me during the Haute Route really helped me to dial in my efforts and not burn too many matches too early. Furthermore, analysis of the data post event has allowed me and my coach to develop a plan for next year’s HR Alps which is going to move me well up the GC – top 50 is the goal. But why Infocrank and not one of the myriad other systems available? Well for starters its the accuracy / consistency of output day after day, ride after ride, mile after mile. Consistency and accuracy of output is key to achieving those marginal watt by watt gains that ultimately pays off in the high mountains. I’m confident, because of the robust technology of Infocrank, that a watt or two increase in FTP IS an actual gain and not just because of temperature differences, calibration or other similar errors. As an added bonus the system is easy to install and the shifting on the Praxis rings is very smooth. If you want to improve your cycling performance you need to train with power as your prime metric; and if you want to get the most out of your power based training I recommend the Infocrank system.
